Coast Salish Sacred Lifeways and the Lifeways of Jesus

A Book by Patrick J. Twohy

syəyaʔyaʔ The Coast Salish Sacred Lifeways and the Sacred Lifeways of Jesus, his third publication, is a rally cry from the heart of the Coast Salish, other Indigenous peoples and the Most Holy. Through it, he draws us a much-needed road map that can bring us closer to a ubiquitous reconciliation. He shows us how, through true friendships, we can erase notions of race, class, gender, or ethnicity. He shows us how love and compassion can wash away the meaningless chatter that feeds our deepest fears and insecurities. He puts forward ancient cultural teachings and practices that show us how we can experience the Most Holy in all things and how we can heal ourselves and the world. With a sense of urgent trepidation, he gently nudges us forward, encouraging us to push the limits of our understanding of friendship. He shows us how together we can lift up and nurture the dignity of all, in both the seen and unseen worlds.

What people are saying about the book

“If there was ever someone who understands Coast Salish People, it is Father Pat. It’s because his heart is as big as our traditions.”

Keahu, Ryan W. Booth, Upper Skagit

“This book invites us to sit at the table that expands to welcome all of us, to eat food that sustains all of us, to hear words that lift all of us. In this book, we find Spirit through healing, through compassion, through traditional lifeways, and most of all, through love. This book is a gift from a man who has spent his life giving.”

Janet Yoder, author of Where the Language Lives: Vi Hilbert and the Gift of Lushootseed

“To read Father Pat Twohy’s poetic book syəyaʔyaʔis to take a journey alongside a generous heart. This reads like an extended prayer that reconciles the oneness of deep experience of the Holy with real friends that Father Pat has embraced along the way. You will want to join them.”

Robert Rudine, student, friend, and supporter of Vi Hilbert and Lushootseed Research

“I found the book so rich and sort of a summing up of Pat’s whole life and everything he’s learned. I think it’s such an important message for the world: There is no difference between the messages of Jesus and the spiritual teachings of tribal elders going back thousands of years, and these teachings must be heard by people throughout the world if we as a species are to survive.”

Steve Trainer, longtime friend of Pat and former Board Member of Chief Seattle Club
